The project is a resort targeted for international tourists. It is on a hilly site with glorious views of the mountains. The project consists of guest ethnic houses and a restaurant. A conference hall, sports hall and swimming pool are to be built in the future. The ethnic guest house is of different Nepali ethnic groups such as Newari, Gurung, Sherpa etc. The common buildings as Restaurant, Reception adopt local Newari style.
The building is three storey’s and is constructed with beam and column (frame structure) system. The roof is sloped and the walls are brick infill.
The project is a home for a Nepali upper middle class family of four members. The plinth area is 1400 square feet. There are living, dining, and kitchen guest rooms with a restroom on the ground floor. There is also a deck covered with trellis with vines. The site also contains a large garden in front of the deck and a kitchen garden at the back with a maid’s quarter. Three bedrooms with attached dressing and WC and a family room are on the first floor.
The main structural system is a column-beam system (frame system) with a flat/slope roof and infill brick walls. The architecture adopts a mix of a modern and traditional style. The building facade is plastered and painted. Wood doors and windows adopt traditional style.
The local building details enrich the building facade. There is beautiful scenery of mountains and Himalayas from the site.
In this project JSA renovated the exterior facade of the building including roof and the entire multipurpose hall. Exterior facade renovation consisted of the design of the doors and windows, renovation of the roof area and floor.
Interior renovation involved the creation of a modern interior with local Nepali interior ornaments/details. Triangular shaped ceiling with window niches were used to reduce the high ceiling of the hall and achieve a playful interior. A copper horizontal band decorates the hall and also reflects light. The walls are decorated with local hand woven dhaka panels in different shapes and colors. The panels partition acoustically and provide as for heat/cold insulation. The floor is of soft rubber wood. The services (HVAC, electricity etc.) are inside the false ceiling.
At the main entrance to the hall, an entry porch leads to the multipurpose hall and rest rooms. This space was rebivated as a landing space, where people can hang their coats and umbrellas and access the big notice boards decorated with local hand weaved dhakas.
Lights are playfully reflected with copper bands.
This project is a renovation of British Embassy Club hall. Renovation of building facade, the roof and the entire interior was carried out.
Exterior facade renovation: Wood carved trellises and a fire place was designed in the front of the building. Clay tiles are used on the roof of the fire place. The concrete tiled exterior flooring was converted into traditional clay tiled flooring.
Interior renovation: Client required a 17th century English club with low height ceiling, wooden floor and ample wooden decorative elements.
Wooden decorative details were extensively used like brass striped wooden pilasters on the walls, wooden rafters on the ceiling, wooden floor with wooden skirting, wooden furniture and wooden partitions etc. The A/C ducts were concealed inside wooden decorative boxes. The design of the bar top with solid wood is influenced from ancient architecture
The multipurpose building is located at the entry of the school premises. The plinth area of the building is 1200 square meter. The building is connected with the adjacent building consisting of classrooms. The ground floor of the building includes auditorium, support rooms and administrative spaces. A gymnasium with its support rooms is included in the first floor. This two storied building is constructed as a framed structure. The infill walls are brick cavity walls. The roof is supported on steel truss with thermal boards. The cavity walls and thermal boards on the roof provide good thermal insulation against the prevailing damp and heat.
The architectural design is a fusion of local traditional architecture and modern style. The facade is fair faced brick with local details of brick pattern while the aluminum sections are used in the doors and windows.
