PATAN HERITAGE CONSERVATION ACTION PLAN

The rapid destruction of the historic fabric of Patan Monument Zone has forced its inhabitants to focus on conservation and environmental issues. This Action Plan proposes revolutionary ideas to protect and regenerate the old spirit of the city core.
The Report includes:

  • Part I – the study area is defined as the designated Patan Monument Zone (PMZ), being Patan Durbar Square and adjacent historic neighborhoods.
  • Part II – outlines the existing physical conditions of the major components of the Patan Protected Monument Zone (PMZ} emphasizing the status of the monuments, open spaces and private residences as well as the state of basic services.
  • Part III – The Conservation Vision for Patan details proposals for the major components of the PMZ. These proposals are directed at achieving visual as well as economic improvements for the historic center of Patan and arresting the insidious decay of the cultural environment.
  • Part IV – the proposal for a new institutional framework recommends the creation of the Patan Heritage Conservation Authority with unequivocal government and municipal support.

HALJI GOMPA CONSERVATION PROJECT

The Halji Gompa Conservation Project was established by Nepal Trust, an NGO working with health, education, sanitation, renewable energy, eco-tourism, heritage conservation and student programmes in Humla District. To initiate an international programme to raise funds for the repair and rehabilitation of the Gompa, John Sanday Associates were commissioned to undertake a survey of the existing condition of the structure and fabric, historic and cultural values of the Gompa and to make recommendations for its repair and rehabilitation.

JSA prepared the physical and structural survey of the Gompa and detailed recommendations for a development strategy together with budget estimates for the repair and rehabilitation of the Gompa Complex. The consolidation of wall paintings and emergency repair work of the structure of the Gompa was carried out in 2003. The JSA field team included a conservation architect, an Italian wall paintings restorer and a master carpenter. The project was a part of the historic monuments conservation and training programme and is expected to continue in Halji and other parts of the region in future.
